My name is Charlotte Thompson. I’m a story consultant, writer and editor.
“Stories are a communal currency of humanity.”
― Tahir Shah
I’m currently available for development editing and mentoring.
I’m based in London and can meet in person or online, depending on your location. I’d love to hear about your writing project. You can contact me to discuss what might work for you, and for a bespoke quote.
‘Charlotte is an outstanding dramaturg. She has worked for me as a dramaturg on two recent plays, Infamous and The Divine Mrs S. Her insights and clear thinking have been invaluable.’
April De Angelis, Playwright (shortlisted for 2024 Susan Smith Blackburn Award for The Divine Mrs S)
Script Editor
I work through conversation with writers to draw out the stories they want to tell. I’ll provide creative solutions to help you develop and shape your story from initial concept to final draft, supporting character development, structure, genre and tone. I’ll also help you hone pitch documents and outlines. I’m experienced at running writers’ rooms to break episodes and generate story arcs across a series, as well working 1-1 with writers to provide editorial guidance and support restructurings. I provide clear written and verbal feedback notes at all stages and work to support writers in implementing broadcaster’s notes. Writers worked with include: Amanda Duke, Lisa McMullen and Michael Bhim.
Working on projects from the seed of an idea until final draft and everything in between. I can provide support with structuring your story, finding the turning points, refining dialogue and character development. I work with individual writers or with theatre companies to develop shows through R & D workshops/ rehearsals. It’s always about drawing out the best version of the story you want to tell.
Dramaturg
Teaching and Mentoring
I’ve had plays broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and Radio 4 and performed at the Midlands Arts Centre and Soho Theatre Studio. I was The Writers Lab UK and Ireland Semifinalist 2021 for my TV pilot TUESDAY. I currently write for BRICKarts, developing work intersecting new writing and socially engaged practice. I’ve developed plays with offenders at HMP Peterborough where I was Writer in Residence for three years; collaborated with councils to create verbatim plays; worked with elders to develop reminiscence pieces and devised new writing with young people. In 2024 I was awarded the DYCP Grant from Arts Council England to develop my novel SOME STILL LIVING THING (working title) .
Writer
I’ve taught scriptwriting and creative writing for the past fourteen years. I developed and ran an MA Scriptwriting (Stage, Screen and Audio) at Middlesex University, and have delivered creative writing programmes in prisons, in F.E colleges, and with at-risk young people. I was the founder of Writers Retreat, a residential creative writing retreat and mentoring service, and mentor writers through all stages of their creative projects. Those I have worked with have gone on to attain commissions and agents off the back of manuscripts I’ve consulted on, and win publishing deals. I’ve supported prize-winning authors, dramatists and scriptwriters at all stages of their careers.
‘Charlotte's guidance is essential when I write a play or a script. Her feedback and insights have been invaluable in transforming my rough draft into a polished play. I highly recommend her expertise to any fellow writer looking to develop their work to a professional level.’
